It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about hunting with an arrow without a feather or with a stick. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the animal dies due to its point, then eat it; and if it strikes the animal with its broad side and it dies, then it is «وقيذ» (carrion), do not eat it."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2047)
In another hadith in Sahih Bukhari (5477), it is stated that if the (mi‘rad) blade wounds and tears apart the (game), then eat it; but if the game is killed by the flat side of the mi‘rad, then do not eat it, for it is carrion.
From this hadith, it is understood that if a stone thrown from a slingshot kills the game, it will not be lawful (halal), because it kills the animal by its weight (thaqal), not by tearing it. However, a bullet from a gun tears and penetrates the flesh.
