Sa’ib bin Yazid heard from Sufyan bin Abi Zuhair, who was narrating hadith to the people at the door of the mosque, saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Whoever keeps a dog that is neither for farming nor for livestock, then a qirat from his good deeds is reduced every day. Sa’ib said: I asked, did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? He replied: Yes, yes, by the Lord of this mosque, (I heard this from the Prophet, peace be upon him).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2042 to 2044)
In these hadiths, the mention of a qirat is made, which is, with Allah, a known measure.
In the Book of Funerals (Kitab al-Jana'iz), it is stated that one qirat is equal to Mount Uhud, and here what is meant is that an immense amount of good deeds is diminished.
Firstly, it is that the angels of mercy do not enter such a house.
Secondly, such a dog runs to attack passersby and guests coming and going, and the sin of this is upon the one who keeps the dog.
Thirdly, it keeps defiling the household utensils by putting its mouth in them.
Fourthly, it eats impurities and returns to the house, bringing with it foul odor and other impurities, and there are many other reasons as well.
For this reason, Islamic law (Shari‘ah) has strictly prohibited keeping a useless dog in the house; hunting dogs and other trained guard dogs are exempt from this.
(Raz)
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that a dog may also be kept for the protection of crops, just as it is permissible to keep a dog for hunting and for livestock. Keeping a dog merely for amusement is prohibited, and those who do so have a great amount of their good deeds diminished daily.
