حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاق بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرِ بْنِ حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ حَكِيمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ: "نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ النُّهْبَةِ" . قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد: هَذَا فِي الْغَزْوِ إِذَا غَنِمُوا قَبْلَ أَنْ يُقْسَمَ.
Abdur Rahman bin Samurah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade looting. Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: What is meant by this is the looting of war booty before its distribution in battles.
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2033)
Looting is never permissible, whether it concerns war booty (mal-e-ghanīmah) or anyone else's property. The Divine command is: «﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ ...﴾ [النساء : 29]» "O believers! Do not consume one another's wealth unjustly." In this hadith, looting and highway robbery are prohibited, and these are forbidden (haram).
