Hadith 2032

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Khaybar forbade the meat of domesticated donkeys, and permitted (the eating of) horse meat.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 2030 to 2032)

The meat of the horse is permissible and lawful without any dislike (karahah), but because it was needed for jihad and riding, it was not commonly consumed. Some jurists (fuqaha) have declared it unlawful (haram) and some have considered it disliked (makruh), but the preferred (rajih) opinion is that horse meat is lawful (halal), as is evident from the aforementioned ahadith.
And Allah knows best.
