Hadith 2000

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to keep (meat provisions) as travel supplies from Makkah to Madinah. Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: That is, they used to keep the meat of the sacrifice.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1999)

From these ahadith, it is understood that one should eat from the meat of the sacrifice (qurbani) oneself, and also feed the poor, the needy, and those who ask. The meat of the sacrifice should be divided into three portions: one portion for oneself, one portion for friends and acquaintances, and one portion for the poor and destitute.
