Hadith 1987

It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah begin, and any one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, then he should not cut his hair nor trim his nails."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1985 to 1987)

From the words of these authentic hadiths «مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُضَحِّيَ», the ruling is derived that whoever does not wish to offer a sacrifice (qurbani), there is no restriction or sin upon him. Most likely, this is the intent of Imam Darimi rahimahullah from the chapter and the hadiths of the chapter.

It is also understood from these hadiths that if one intends to offer a sacrifice, then the person offering the sacrifice should neither cut hair nor trim nails from the sighting of the crescent of Dhu al-Hijjah until the sacrifice is performed. And this ruling is recommended (mustahabb); according to some esteemed jurists, it is prohibited (haram) for the one offering the sacrifice to cut hair or nails.

The first ruling is more correct, and in the aforementioned hadiths, the prohibition is one of dislike (tanzihi), not of strict prohibition (tahrimi). Furthermore, this ruling is for the person offering the sacrifice; it is not necessary for his family members to observe this restriction.
