It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two rams on the day of Eid, and when he turned their faces towards the Qiblah, he recited this verse: «إِنِّيْوَجَّهْتُ ...... الْمُسْلِمِيْنَ» "I have turned my face towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, being upright, a Muslim, and I am not of those who associate partners with Allah. Surely, my prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. He has no partner, and I have been commanded this, and I am the first of those who submit." Then he recited this supplication: «اَللّٰهُمَّهَذَامِنْكَوَلَكَعَنْمُحَمَّدٍوَأُمَّتِهٖ» meaning: O Allah, this sacrifice is from You and for You, on behalf of Muhammad and his Ummah. Then he said «بسم الله اكبر» and slaughtered (the animal).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1983 to 1985)
Sacrificing (qurbani) is a Sunnah and is greatly beloved to Allah Ta'ala. If it is performed with sincerity and for the sake of Allah alone, then before even a drop of its blood falls to the ground, it attains the honor of acceptance. For this, it is not necessary to be a sahib-e-nisab (possessor of the minimum amount of wealth required for zakat); if one has the means, one should perform the sacrifice. If not, then it is not correct to take a loan in order to perform the sacrifice. The sacrifice can be of a goat (bakra), ram (maindha), cow (gai), or camel (oont). One goat or one ram is sufficient on behalf of one family. In the case of a cow or camel, up to seven people can share in one sacrifice.
In the aforementioned hadith, the sacrifice of a ram by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is established. Although one ram was sufficient, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed one sacrifice on his own behalf and on behalf of his ummah, and one on behalf of his family. At the time of sacrifice, he laid the ram down facing the qiblah, placed his foot upon it, recited the aforementioned verse and supplication, and then proceeded with the sacrifice. This is the method; to perform the sacrifice in this manner is Sunnah. May Allah Ta'ala grant everyone the ability to do so. (Ameen).
Other rulings regarding sacrifice will be mentioned ahead.
