Hadith 1950

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Zuhr prayer at Dhul-Hulaifah, then he called for a camel and made an incision on the right side of its hump, then he cleaned the blood from it and hung two sandals around its neck. Then the riding animal (she-camel) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was brought, and he mounted it, and when it reached the plain of Bayda, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed the Talbiyah for Hajj.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1949)

The marking (ish‘ar) of the sacrificial animal (hady), that is, making a cut as a sign, is Sunnah. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam marked the hady camel, as is clear from the aforementioned hadith. This is the view of the majority of scholars and the Ahl al-Hadith. Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah said: Ish‘ar is disliked (makruh), and he said that it is a kind of mutilation (muthlah). It is astonishing that an act performed by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself should be called makruh. When Waki‘ ibn al-Jarrah narrated the hadith about the marking (ish‘ar) of the hady, a man interjected, saying that Abu Hanifah calls this mutilation. Imam Waki‘ said: I am narrating a hadith to you, and you bring the statement of Abu Hanifah? You deserve to be imprisoned, and then remain in prison until you repent.
