Hadith 1938

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to instruct us to perform the stoning of the Jamarat with small pebbles. Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked: Is Abdur Rahman bin Mu'adh a companion? He replied: Yes.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1936 to 1938)
All these hadiths prove that one should perform the stoning (rami) at the Jamarat with small pebbles; throwing large stones, rocks, shoes, sandals, etc., is contrary to the Sunnah and, in fact, is extremism (ghuluw) in religion.
In [ابن ماجه 3029] it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), while throwing pebbles, said: "O people! Beware of extremism (ghuluw) in religion, for those before you were destroyed only because of extremism in religion."
Therefore, extremism in any religious matter is prohibited, and one should avoid it.
