Hadith 1922

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) combined Maghrib and Isha prayers at Muzdalifah, and did not give the adhan for any of the prayers, only one iqamah was called. He did not offer any sunnah or nafl prayers between the two prayers, nor after the prayer.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1918 to 1922)
From these hadiths, the evidence is established for combining the two prayers (jam‘ bayn al-salatayn) at Muzdalifah, that is, performing Maghrib and ‘Isha together. The difference of opinion concerns the call to prayer (adhan) and the commencement (iqamah), because from Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhuma, various narrations are reported on this matter. In the aforementioned narration, only the iqamah is mentioned. Regarding this, the scholars have different opinions. The correct view is that in combining the two prayers, the adhan should be given for the first prayer, and the iqamah (takbir) should be said for both prayers.

This is the position of the Ahl al-Hadith, Hanbalis, and Shafi‘is, and this is the preferred view. Some scholars have said that there should be two adhans and two iqamahs, and some have said neither adhan nor iqamah, and some have said only iqamah should be said, not adhan. The correct position is the one mentioned above.

Muzdalifah is called "Jam‘" because there Sayyiduna Adam and Sayyidah Hawwa’ alayhima al-salam were united. Some have said that it is called so because two prayers are combined there.

Ibn al-Mundhir rahimahullah has transmitted consensus (ijma‘) on the point that between the two prayers at Muzdalifah, neither supererogatory (nafl) nor sunnah prayers should be performed. Ibn al-Mundhir rahimahullah said: Whoever performs sunnah or nafl prayers in between, his combining (jam‘) will not be valid.
