Hadith 1913

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two rak‘ahs of prayer at Mina, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also performed two rak‘ahs, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also performed two rak‘ahs. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) also performed two rak‘ahs at the beginning of his caliphate, then later performed four rak‘ahs.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1911 to 1913)

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was in a state of travel, and for this reason, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as well as after him, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhuma, performed the prayers of Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha in Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah in shortened form (qasr). Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu also used to perform only two rak‘ahs in the beginning, but later he performed four rak‘ahs. His reasoning was that people coming from distant places might not mistakenly think that these prayers are only two rak‘ahs as an obligation, and therefore he performed the full four rak‘ahs. This was the ijtihad (independent reasoning) of Amir al-Mu’minin Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu, which is not acceptable in the presence of and in opposition to the Sunnah of the Prophet. For this reason, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar and Sayyiduna Ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhum expressed displeasure at this, but in obedience to the leader, they followed him completely and did not separate themselves from the congregation.
