Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Is the Hatim also included in the House of Allah? He said: "Yes." I said: Then why did people not include it in the Ka'bah? He said: "Your people ran short of construction materials." I said: Then why was the door kept so high? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your people did this so that they could allow in whomever they wished and prevent whomever they wished. If your people had not been so close to the time of ignorance, I would have included the Hatim in the Ka'bah and lowered the door to the ground. I fear that their hearts would not accept this (change)."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1905 to 1907)
The Ka‘bah is the very first house of Allah Ta‘ala on the face of the earth, upon which the angels first worshipped Allah Ta‘ala, and which was constructed by Hazrat Adam alayhis salam. After the flood of Nuh, its traces were erased. Allah Ta‘ala appointed Hazrat Ibrahim and Hazrat Isma‘il alayhima salam for its re-establishment and reconstruction. «﴿وَإِذْ يَرْفَعُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْقَوَاعِدَ ...﴾ [البقره : 127]» After the construction by Hazrat Ibrahim alayhis salam, the Banu Jurhum rebuilt the Ka‘bah upon the same foundation, then the ‘Amaliqah, and after them Qusayy bin Kilab, and then the Quraysh reconstructed the Ka‘bah, which took place only five years before the Prophethood of Muhammad (upon him be prayers and peace). The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also participated in its construction along with his uncle, Sayyiduna ‘Abbas bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib radi Allahu anhu. When the issue arose regarding the placement of the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) in its blessed location, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, at the suggestion of the nobles of Makkah, resolved this matter with great wisdom and to the satisfaction of all. The details can be found in the books of Seerah.
Due to a shortage of funds in this construction, a portion of the Ka‘bah had to be left outside, which is known as Hatim or Hijr, and around it is a marble wall about one meter high. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam declared that performing prayer in this place is equivalent to praying inside the Ka‘bah. Because it is a part of the Ka‘bah, if anyone passes through it during circumambulation (tawaf), his tawaf will not be complete. The Quraysh raised the walls of the Ka‘bah to eighteen cubits, laid the floor, put a roof on it, installed a water spout, left the door elevated as it was, and established three pillars each to the north and south inside the House of Allah. Later, ‘Abdullah bin al-Zubayr incorporated the Hatim into the Ka‘bah, but during the Umayyad or Abbasid caliphates, it was returned to the original Quraysh construction. Now, in the era of the Saudi government, during the reign of King Fahd rahimahullah, an exemplary model of construction, adornment, and embellishment has been presented. King Khalid rahimahullah made the door out of pure gold.
