Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ramal (brisk walking) in the first three circuits from the Black Stone to the Black Stone.

Ramal refers to walking briskly with short, quick steps, which is prescribed only in the Tawaf al-Qudum (the arrival circumambulation). The reason for this was that when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came to Makkah after the Hijrah, the polytheists believed that the climate or epidemic of Madinah Tayyibah had weakened the Muhajirun (emigrants), and they gathered to observe the Muslims. At that time, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered that during the Tawaf al-Qudum, they should perform ramal and idtiba‘ (exposing the right shoulder) and circumambulate with a proud, brisk gait so that the polytheists of Makkah could perceive their strength.
Now, although the polytheists are no longer in Makkah Mukarramah, this has become a Sunnah of Tawaf al-Qudum, as Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) said: “Because my Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed ramal, I will also perform ramal.” In some narrations, it is also mentioned to walk briskly between the two corners (ar-Rukn al-Yamani and al-Hajar al-Aswad) during the first three circuits.
