Hadith 1868

Sayyiduna Sa'b bin Jathamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me at the place of Abwa or Waddan, so I presented him with the meat of a wild donkey, but he returned it to me. When he saw sadness on my face, he said: "We did not need to return it, but at this time we are in the state of Ihram."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1866 to 1868)

For a muhrim (one in the state of ihram) to hunt is, by consensus of the scholars, forbidden. If a muhrim points towards the game or assists in the hunt, then the meat of that game is also forbidden for the muhrim, as is evident from the hadith of Sayyiduna Sa'b bin Jaththamah radi Allahu anhu. However, if a non-muhrim hunts of his own accord, without any assistance from a muhrim, and without the intention of providing the meat to those in ihram, then in such a case, those in ihram may eat the meat of that game. The ahadith of this chapter guide towards this, and for this reason, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself ate the meat of game and fed it to the noble Companions, as is found in the hadith of Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah radi Allahu anhu.
