Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1854 to 1856)
Killing and bloodshed are not permissible within the boundaries of the Haram, but harmful predatory animals are exempt from this; it is permissible to kill them everywhere and in every situation.
Maulana Raz Sahib rahimahullah writes: As much as these five animals are harmful, it is evident that by commanding their killing, the Noble Lawgiver sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has guided mankind towards resolving many financial, physical, economic, and nutritional issues. The crow and the kite (which snatches) are notorious for robbery, and the scorpion is notorious for its stinging, the rat is harmful to human health and is an enemy of stored foods, and the biting dog is extremely dangerous for health. This is the reason their killing is permissible everywhere.
[شرح بخاري 1829].
In Sahih Muslim, the snake is also mentioned; therefore, these six harmful animals are, under the principle of “killing the harmful before harm occurs” (qatl al-mudhi qabl al-idha’), obligatory to kill. Similarly, those animals which fall under this category, such as lions, leopards, etc., and some jurists have included the wolf in the definition of “dog” (kalb) as well. And Allah knows best.
