Hadith 1852

Muhammad bin Abdullah Naufal said: The year when Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) performed Hajj, I heard him asking Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): What do you say about Tamattu’ after Umrah for Hajj? (That is, about removing Ihram after Umrah and then putting on Ihram again for Hajj on the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah). He replied: Tamattu’ is very good and excellent, that is, it is superior. Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: But Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prohibit it (Tamattu’), so are you better than Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)? He replied: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was better than me, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did it, and he was better than Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1851)

SubhanAllah, what a question and how precise and measured the answer: that Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu was better and more virtuous than me, but the Noble Being who was the best, highest, and most superior among all of us commanded us to do so.

There is no disparagement of anyone in this, and it is an indication of the status of Prophethood.

From this, the superiority of Hajj al-Tamattu‘ is proven.
