Hadith 1846

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the Talbiyah in this way: «لَبَّيْكَ اَللّٰهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ .......... That is, "Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise and blessings are Yours, and the kingdom is Yours, You have no partner." Yahya said: Nafi' mentioned that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to add this much more to it: «لَبَّيْكَ وَالرَّغْبَاءُ إِلَيْكَ وَالْعَمَلُ، لَبَّيْكَ لَبَّيْكَ

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1845)

After entering into the state of ihram, it is necessary to recite the talbiyah («اَللّٰهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ») frequently until reaching the Sacred House (Bayt Allah al-Haram). This talbiyah is the response to the call that Ibrahim (alayhis salam) proclaimed « ﴿وَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا﴾ [الحج :27]»: "And proclaim the pilgrimage to mankind; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel." In response to this, the pilgrim and the one performing ‘umrah say: O Lord! We are present in Your service to circumambulate Your House, to perform sa‘i, and to exalt Your remembrance.

The legislated and transmitted (marfu‘) talbiyah is as follows: «لَبَّيْكَ اَللّٰهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ. Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) added «لَبَّيْكَ وَالرَّغْبَاءُ إِلَيْكَ وَالْعَمَلُ، لَبَّيْكَ لَبَّيْكَ to it, which was from his own discretion. Some scholars have considered this permissible, while others have considered it impermissible. It is better to suffice with only those words that are transmitted from the Messenger of Guidance, Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). And Allah knows best, and His knowledge is most complete.
