Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan while he was observing i’tikaf. She spoke with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for a short while and then stood up (to return).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1817)
It is prohibited to leave the mosque without necessity or to engage in idle talk during i‘tikaf (spiritual retreat). From this hadith, it is understood that the person observing i‘tikaf may speak with his wife, and the wife may come to the mosque to meet him. The aforementioned hadith is a part of a longer narration; further details can be found in Sahih al-Bukhari and other sources.
