Hadith 1815

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We fasted the month of Ramadan with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he did not perform Tarawih with us on any night of the entire month, until when seven nights remained (that is, on the twenty-third night), he stood with us in prayer, meaning he performed Tarawih, until one third of the night had passed. Then, when six nights remained (that is, on the twenty-fourth night), he did not stand in prayer. When five nights remained (that is, on the twenty-fifth night), he stood with us in prayer (performed Tarawih) until half the night had passed. We said: O Messenger of Allah! Should we not pray for the rest of the night as well? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever stands with the Imam in prayer until he finishes, it is written for him as if he spent the whole night in prayer.” Then, when four nights remained (the twenty-sixth night), he did not stand in prayer. After that, when three nights remained, that is, the twenty-seventh night, he gathered his family and the people also gathered, and he stood in prayer until we feared that success would be missed. We asked Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): What is meant by success? He replied: The pre-dawn meal (suhoor). Then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After that, he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not stand in prayer for the remaining nights.
