Hadith 1812

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no righteous deed more beloved to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, than the deed performed by a servant during the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah." It was asked: Not even striving in the way of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic? He said: "Not even striving in the way of Allah, except for a man who goes out with his self and his wealth and returns with none of them." The narrator said: For this reason, Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) used to exert himself in worship beyond his capacity during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1810 to 1812)

From this hadith, the virtue of the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah is established, in which righteous deeds are more beloved and pleasing to Allah Ta'ala than in any other days of the year. For this reason, the esteemed scholars have said that, in terms of deeds, these ten days are even superior to the days of Ramadan. However, the nights of Ramadan are superior to all other nights of the year. In these days, there is great reward for reciting takbir, fasting, and giving charity and alms. Fasting from the first to the ninth day is recommended (mustahabb) and a Sunnah, as mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud.
