Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1808)

Fasting is a shield for protecting oneself from sins or for protecting oneself from Hellfire, just as a shield in battle protects from the blows of the enemy.

From these ahadith, the virtue of fasting is established: on the Day of Resurrection, seeing its immense reward, the fasting person will be delighted.

And the reward for fasting is limitless and beyond measure, and for the fasting person there is glad tidings from the Lord of all worlds, the Most Merciful of those who show mercy «فَإِنَّه لِيْ وَ أَنَا أَجْزِيْ بِهِ». Likewise, fasting is like a shield that will protect from the fire of Hell, just as a shield protects from the blows of the enemy.
