Hadith 1786

Muhammad bin ‘Abbad bin Ja‘far said: I asked Sayyiduna Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid fasting on Friday? He said: Yes, by the Lord of this Ka‘bah.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1785)

In this hadith, Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu has sworn and stated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam specifically forbade fasting on Friday. Therefore, it is prohibited to single out Friday or its night for any particular act of worship, as is mentioned in Sahih Muslim: «لَاتَخُصُّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ بِقِيَامٍ ...... However, if someone has made a vow to fast on a certain date and that date happens to fall on a Friday, then there is no harm. Similarly, if the day of Arafah falls on a Friday, then for a non-pilgrim there is no harm in fasting, or if the last day of the white days (Ayyam al-Beedh) coincides with Friday, then there is no harm. And whoever wishes to fast on Friday should also fast one day before or one day after, so as not to oppose the hadith.
