Hadith 1758

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman should not observe even a single voluntary fast, apart from Ramadan, in the presence of her husband without his permission."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1756 to 1758)

A voluntary fast (nafl roza) is a supererogatory act of worship, while obedience to the husband is obligatory (fard) upon the woman. Therefore, fulfilling an obligation takes precedence over a voluntary act of worship. If a man wishes to have intercourse with his wife during the day, the woman must break her voluntary fast. Thus, it is better for her to seek permission beforehand if she wishes to keep a voluntary fast (Maulana Raz rahimahullah).
