Hadith 1746

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out (from Madinah) in the year Makkah was conquered, he fasted during the journey and all the people also fasted. When he reached the place of Kadid, he broke his fast and all the people also broke their fast. The companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them all) would immediately adopt any new action of his.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1744 to 1746)

That is, the noble Companions (Sahabah) would, in following the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), immediately act upon whatever they saw him do. When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) set out on a journey while fasting, the noble Companions also kept the fast. When the Beloved of the Universe (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) broke his fast, they too broke their fast. And this is the true obedience and following.
