Hadith 1744

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade continuous fasting (fasting for several days without breaking the fast at iftar or suhoor). Upon this, one of the Muslims said: O Messenger of Allah! But you observe continuous fasting? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am not like you; my Lord feeds me and gives me drink during the night." Even then, when the people did not refrain from continuous fasting, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed continuous fasting with them for two days, then the moon of Eid appeared. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the moon had not appeared, I would have continued fasting for more days," as if, when the companions did not refrain from continuous fasting, the Prophet said this as a punishment.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1741 to 1744)

From all these hadiths, the prohibition of wisal (continuous fasting without breaking the fast at sunset or taking the pre-dawn meal) is established, meaning that it is forbidden to observe consecutive fasts without iftar (breaking the fast) and suhoor (pre-dawn meal), because there is hardship in it. In acting upon the commands that Allah, the Exalted, has revealed, there is mercy and blessing. If a person takes suhoor, and breaks the fast after twelve hours or more or less, then health and strength will remain, and the fasting person will not fall into hardship and distress.

There is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding this prohibition of wisal. Some scholars have said that this prohibition is of a haram (forbidden) nature, some have said it is of a tanzihi (discouraged but not sinful) nature, and some scholars have taken a middle path: for the one upon whom wisal is difficult, it is haram, and if it is not difficult, then wisal is permissible for him. In an authentic hadith, it is stated that if someone insists on wisal in fasting, then he should only do so up to suhoor.

Also, in this hadith: "My Lord feeds me and gives me drink," the meaning could be the real food and drink of Paradise, or it could be spiritual nourishment, that Allah, the Exalted, granted the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam such strength that he did not feel the need for eating or drinking.
