Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the night comes from this side (i.e., the east) and the day departs from that side (i.e., the west), then your time for iftar (breaking the fast) has arrived."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1737)
In the narration of Sahih Bukhari it is stated: «فقد أفطر الصائم» meaning, when the sun sets in the west, it is time for the fasting person to break his fast. Imam Ibn Khuzaymah rahimahullah said: its meaning is «فليفطر الصائم» that is, the fasting person should break his fast.
From this hadith it is understood that when one is certain of the sunset, one should break the fast and delaying it is not correct.
In Musannaf ‘Abd al-Razzaq it is mentioned: The companions of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would hasten to break the fast and would delay the pre-dawn meal (suhoor) more than other people.
In the present era, some people generally delay breaking the fast and eat the pre-dawn meal early; for this reason, goodness is becoming distant from them, and they are falling into evil and tribulation, and destruction is coming upon them. The statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is proving true: ever since Muslims have abandoned acting upon the Sunnah, they are falling day by day into the pit of decline, and goodness and blessing are disappearing.
