Hadith 1736

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does not make the intention for fasting before Fajr, his fast will not be valid." Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I say this regarding obligatory and mandatory fasts.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1735)

For obligatory fasting, it is necessary to make the intention (niyyah) in the heart before the break of dawn (fajr). This was also the position of Imam Darimi rahimahullah, and it is the same position held by the Ahl al-Hadith. In the case of voluntary (nafl) fasts, even if one does not make the intention at night, the fast will still be valid, as is established from the hadith of Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha and from the incident where the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, upon asking for food and not finding any, said: "Now I am fasting." The intention for fasting is to be made only in the heart; the words "Nawaitu yawman min shahri Ramadan" and similar phrases are inventions of people and are not established from any authentic hadith. Therefore, they should be abandoned.

(And Allah knows best).
