Hadith 1735

Abu Qais, the slave of Amr ibn al-As, said that our master Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) used to order us to prepare food so that we could partake in suhoor, but he himself would not eat much. We said: You order us to prepare food, but you do not eat much yourself? Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I do not order the food to be prepared because I have a great appetite for eating, but I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The difference between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is the (pre-dawn) meal of suhoor." (That is why I eat a little.)

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1733 to 1735)

From the first hadith, the virtue of eating suhur (pre-dawn meal) is established, as there is blessing in it. The fasting person gains strength from it, he wakes up for suhur, remembers Allah, after finishing eating for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, he performs the congregational prayer. All these virtues are attained.

In the second hadith, it is mentioned that the People of the Book do not partake in suhur, therefore you should eat suhur. In another hadith, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam called the suhur meal «الغذاء المبارك», and in a narration of Sunan al-Nasa’i, it is stated that suhur is among the gifts from Allah, so do not abandon it. From all these narrations, the virtue of eating suhur is established; therefore, it should not be abandoned, even if it is only a few morsels—one should certainly partake in suhur, as our master Amr ibn al-As radi Allahu anhu and other noble companions used to do.
