Hadith 1732

Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse: «وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ» [بقرة: 187/2] was revealed, I said: O Messenger of Allah! I placed a white thread and a black thread under my pillow, but nothing became clear to me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You have a big pillow! What is meant is the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the day.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1731)

In the early days of Islam, some Companions did not understand the meaning of the appearance of dawn (fajr), so they began to determine fajr by means of a white and a black thread. However, when the word «مِنَ الْفَجْرِ» was revealed, they came to know the reality—that by the black thread is meant the darkness of the night, and by the white thread is meant the brightness of the morning.

From this hadith, it is established that after breaking the fast (iftar) until the true dawn (subh sadiq), a person may eat and drink and may also have relations with his wife. In the terminology of the Shari‘ah, the very definition of fasting (sawm) is that a person refrains from eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse from true dawn (subh sadiq) until sunset. After iftar, everything that was prohibited during the fast becomes permissible for him.
