Sayyiduna Salman bin Amir Ad-Dabbi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Giving charity to a poor person is (simply) charity, but giving charity to a relative is both charity and maintaining the ties of kinship."
That is, giving charity (sadaqah) to a poor and needy person earns the reward of charity, but giving charity to a relative or family member brings double the reward: the reward of maintaining kinship ties and the reward of charity.
