Hadith 1701

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with us, we used to give one sa' of grain, or one sa' of dates, or one sa' of barley, or one sa' of cheese, or one sa' of raisins as zakat al-fitr on behalf of every young and old, and slave, and this continued until after Hajj or 'Umrah when Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us in Madinah and said: "In my opinion, two mudd of this Syrian wheat are equal to one sa' of dates." So the people adopted this (i.e., half a sa' of wheat as zakat al-fitr). Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: But I continue to give the same amount of zakat al-fitr as I used to give during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (i.e., a full sa'). Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In my opinion, zakat al-fitr should be given as one sa' of any of the mentioned items.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1700)

In this hadith, the word «صَاعًا مِنْ طَعَامٍ» has appeared, which according to most scholars refers specifically to wheat. Some have said that it means grains other than barley. In this hadith, the categories of items for zakat al-fitr are mentioned, which are grain, dates, barley, cheese, or raisins (zabeeb refers to dried grapes, i.e., raisins or figs). It is obligatory to give one sa‘ (a specific measure) of any one of these items as zakat al-fitr on behalf of each individual.

From this hadith, it is understood that giving only half a sa‘ (one and a half kilograms) of zakat al-fitr instead of a full sa‘ was the opinion of Sayyiduna Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu, which many of the Companions did not accept. Among them is the narrator of this hadith, Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id radi Allahu anhu, who says: “I used to give one sa‘ of zakat al-fitr during the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and I still give one sa‘ now. And this is the command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who did not speak from his own desire: «﴿وَمَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ . Imam Darimi rahimahullah also preferred giving one sa‘ as zakat al-fitr.
