Hadith 1700

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to give one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley as zakat al-fitr on behalf of every young and old, free and slave. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Then the people considered it equivalent to two mudd of wheat.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1699)

By the charity of Fitr (Sadaqat al-Fitr) for young, old, or slave is meant that the person who is their guardian should pay the Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) on their behalf, which is one sa‘ (a measure) of dates or barley or wheat. It should be noted that one sa‘ in the Arabic calculation is equal to four mudd. Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhuma reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam prescribed one sa‘ as obligatory, but people began to give half a sa‘; the details of this will come ahead.
