Hadith 1698

Aslam said: I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to give charity. At that time, I happened to have a lot of wealth, so I thought to myself: Today, if I surpass anyone, I will surpass Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). So I brought half of my wealth and presented it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What have you left for your family?" I replied: I have left the same amount for them. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also brought all that he had. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Abu Bakr, what have you left for your family?" He replied: I have left Allah and His Messenger for them. Then I said: (O Abu Bakr) I will never be able to surpass you.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1697)

From this hadith, the virtue of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) is established, who excelled in sacrificing their wealth and property in the path of Allah.

Then, while acknowledging the greatness of the elders, he expressed that he could never surpass them. Also, it is proven from this hadith that a person should also take care of his family, dependents, and household. Furthermore, it is established that if one has certainty and trust (tawakkul), he can give away everything in charity.

It is also shown that value and status are not in the amount of wealth, but rather in intention and sincerity.

And Allah knows best.
