It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim Ta’i (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Save yourselves from the Fire, even if it be by giving a piece of date; and if you cannot do that, then (save yourselves) by saying a good word.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1693 to 1695)
From the first hadith, the importance of charity (sadaqah) is established because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to command it in every sermon. Also, it contains the prohibition of mutilation (muthlah), because in Islam, a human being is honored and dignified both while alive and after death. That is why it is stated that breaking the bone of a deceased person is just like breaking the bone of a living person, which is a grave sin and for which retribution (qisas) is carried out.
In the second hadith, there is the command to save oneself from the Fire of Hell, even if it is by giving a piece of a date in charity to protect oneself from that punishment. And if someone is unable to give charity or alms, then it is also a great charity to respond to the beggar gently by saying: “I am helpless at this time, please forgive me.” It is not correct to scold or argue with the beggar, as some people say: “You are always asking, your stomach is never full, should we keep giving charity all the time?” It is not correct to use such words; rather, one should gently say: “Brother, at this time I cannot give anything.”
Allah the Exalted says: «﴿وَأَمَّاالسَّائِلَفَلَاتَنْهَرْ﴾ [الضحىٰ : 10]» “And do not scold the beggar.”
