Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "The best charity is that after giving which a person still remains wealthy. Then, let any one of you give charity first to those who are under his care."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1688)
From this hadith, it is understood that a person should give charity, but giving charity is recommended (mustahabb) when he also leaves some wealth for his family and himself, from which he can conduct trade and fulfill the rights of his family. It is not prescribed in the Shari‘ah that one should give away everything in charity and alms and then sit down destitute. Charity and kindness should first be shown to one’s own relatives; they should be favored first, and then kindness and good conduct should be extended to others. Further clarification of «وَأَبْدَأَبِمَنْتَعُولُ» is coming in the next chapter.
Similarly, the details regarding giving away all of one’s wealth or assets in charity will be discussed ahead.
