Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for something, and he gave it to me. I asked again, and he gave it to me again. I asked once more, and he still gave it to me. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hakim! This wealth is indeed lush and sweet, but whoever takes it with a generous heart, there will be blessing in his wealth. And whoever takes it with greed, there will be no blessing in his wealth at all. Its example is like a person who eats but his stomach is not filled."
In this hadith, the Wise Teacher of humanity, the Noble Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, has presented the example of a contented person and a greedy one: Whoever adopts contentment regarding worldly wealth and protects himself from the disease of greed and avarice, the doors of blessings will be opened for him, and even a small amount of wealth will suffice for him. His life will be one of great peace and tranquility.
And the person who is afflicted with the disease of greed and the fever of avarice—his stomach can never be filled, even if he were to acquire all the wealth in the world. He will still remain caught in the cycle of seeking more and more wealth by any means. Such covetous people neither know how to spend in the name of Allah nor possess the motivation to benefit the creation.
(Raz rahimahullah).
After this advice of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam radi Allahu anhu never extended his hand to ask from anyone, even though he lived a long life and passed away in 64 AH at the age of 120. Yet he always kept the advice of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam close to his heart, to the extent that Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu had to say: “O people! Bear witness that I give wealth to Hakim bin Hizam, but he refuses to accept it.”
