Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1678)

From these ahadith, it is understood that for a wealthy (ghani) and able-bodied person, begging is not permissible. According to another hadith, a wealthy (ghani) person is one who possesses fifty dirhams. Some scholars have said: one who has the means for food for a day and night is considered wealthy. Some scholars have said that whoever is a sahib-e-nisab (possessor of the minimum amount liable for zakat) is wealthy. In any case, begging is a reprehensible thing and should be avoided.

There is no earning better than that which is gained through hard work and the labor of one’s own hands. And a person who, despite having wealth, extends his hand to beg for himself, will be raised on the Day of Judgment with a peeled and wounded face. There is a hadith that states there will be no flesh on his face.
