Sayyiduna Ma’n bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that I, my father, and my grandfather pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) arranged my engagement and he himself conducted my marriage. I once brought a case before the Prophet (peace be upon him). The case was that my father Yazid took out some dinars with the intention of giving charity and placed them with a man in the mosque. I went and took those dinars from that man. When I brought them to my father, he said, “By Allah, I did not intend to give them to you (rather, I intended to give charity).” So I brought this case before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he decided, “Yazid, you have received the reward for what you intended, and Ma’n, what you have taken is now yours.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1675)
It is established from this hadith that if, unknowingly, someone gives charity to a wealthy person, the giver will still receive the reward of giving charity, even if the recipient of the charity is his own son. This hadith also demonstrates the wisdom, compassion, and consideration of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam—how he explained that, according to your intention, you have received additional reward, and the wealth has become yours; both parties became satisfied and no dispute remained («فداه أبى و أمي صلى الله عليه وسلم»).
