Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, there is a due on your wealth other than zakat."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1674) This hadith is indeed weak, but from the general verses regarding charity (ayat al-sadaqat), it is understood that the poor have a right beyond just zakat as well. As mentioned while describing the qualities of the believers: « ﴿وَالَّذِينَفِيأَمْوَالِهِمْحَقٌّمَعْلُومٌ . لِلسَّائِلِوَالْمَحْرُومِ﴾ [المعارج : 24-25]» (Translation: And in their wealth there is a known right for the beggar and the deprived). From this verse, the commentators have understood both obligatory charity (sadaqah wajibah) and voluntary charity (sadaqah nafilah), and as is evident from the noble verse: «﴿وَمَاتُقَدِّمُوالِأَنْفُسِكُمْمِنْخَيْرٍتَجِدُوهُعِنْدَاللّٰهِهُوَخَيْرًاوَأَعْظَمَأَجْرًا﴾ [المزمل : 20]» and other similar verses, therefore, it is permissible to give charity and alms from one’s wealth besides zakat as well. In one hadith, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would emphasize giving charity so much that we would feel as if we had no right at all over our remaining wealth, «أو كما قال عليه السلام» .
