Hadith 1673

Abu Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm narrated from his father, who narrated from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wrote to Amr bin Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him) for Sharhabeel bin Abd Kulal, Harith bin Abd Kulal, and Na’eem bin Abd Kulal, stating: “Zakat is obligatory on five dirhams in five awqiyah of silver. If there is more silver than that, then for every forty dirhams, one dirham of zakat is to be added, and there is no zakat on less than five awqiyah.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1670 to 1673)

From these hadiths, it is understood that there is no zakat on grain less than five wasq; similarly, zakat is not obligatory on less than five camels, nor is there zakat on silver less than five uqiyyah, that is, there is no zakat on less than two hundred dirhams (52.50 tola) of silver.
