Hadith 1651

Iyas bin Abi Ramla said: I was with Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him): Did you ever witness Eid and Jumu'ah occurring on the same day with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: Yes. Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Then what did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) do? Zaid said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Eid prayer and then gave a concession regarding Jumu'ah, and said: "Whoever wishes may perform it."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1650)

It is stated in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah: And whoever does not wish, may not offer it, except that the noon (zuhr) prayer is obligatory to perform.

In this hadith, when Eid and Jumu‘ah fall on the same day, after performing the Eid prayer, one is given the choice: if he wishes, he may offer the Jumu‘ah prayer, and if he wishes, he may offer the noon (zuhr) prayer.

The most virtuous is that if the imam leads the Jumu‘ah prayer, then one should perform Jumu‘ah, and if he leads the noon (zuhr) prayer, then one should perform the noon (zuhr) prayer. It is not appropriate to act individually in this matter.

From this hadith, we also learn about the mutual respect among the pious predecessors (aslaf kiram); how Sayyiduna Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu is seeking knowledge from Sayyiduna Zayd ibn Arqam radi Allahu anhu, and does not think that his own rank and status is higher than his, so why should he ask him a question.
