Hadith 1625

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite «سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى», «قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ», and «قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ» in the three rak‘ahs of Witr.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1623 to 1625)

From these ahadith, it is established to perform witr as five, three, and one rak‘ah. However, five witr were performed with one salam, and three rak‘ah were performed with one taslim and one tashahhud. There is also evidence of offering two rak‘ah, then making salam, and then performing one rak‘ah separately. However, there is no evidence of combining three rak‘ah with two tashahhud and one taslim.

Furthermore, reciting the aforementioned surahs in the three rak‘ah witr is sunnah.
