Hadith 1617

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with disheveled hair. He said: "O Messenger of Allah! How many prayers has Allah made obligatory upon me?" He replied: "Five prayers, and fasting (is also) obligatory." After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informed him of the rulings of the religion. So he said: "By Him Who has honored you, I will neither decrease nor increase anything from these obligations." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By his father, if he has spoken truthfully from his heart, he has succeeded." ... Or he said: "By his father, if he has spoken the truth, he will enter Paradise."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1616)

The meaning of this hadith is that if one acts only upon the obligatory acts among the pillars of Islam, without any deficiency or excess, then he will attain success and enter Paradise. And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, for emphasis, swore by the father of the person, even though the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has prohibited swearing by one’s father. The answer to this is that in the two Sahihs, al-Bukhari and Muslim, only «أفلح أن صدق» and «دخل الجنة أن صدق» are mentioned; this oath does not appear in the most authentic narrations. Furthermore, it is possible that this oath was uttered before the prohibition. In any case, it is forbidden (haram) to swear by anyone other than Allah, whether it be one’s father or anyone else. Imam Khattabi rahimahullah said: This is not an oath, but rather an Arabic idiom; therefore, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said it idiomatically.
