Hadith 1604

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the population in Madinah increased, people would come but could not hear the sermon of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and would return in the same way. So the noble Companions submitted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Prophet of Allah! The people have increased; the one who comes cannot hear your speech. He said: Then do as you wish. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called a boy from among the Ansar, who was a carpenter from the Najjar tribe, and told him to make a pulpit from the wood of the jungle tamarisk. So he made two or three steps. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on it and began to deliver the sermon. When he did so, the piece of wood by which he used to stand and deliver the sermon began to cry with a thin sound. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to it and placed his blessed hand upon it, and it became quiet.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1601 to 1604)

Multiple rulings are derived from these blessed hadiths. Firstly, it is established to deliver the sermon (khutbah) while standing on the pulpit (minbar). The pulpit should be made of wood and have three steps. If the space is narrow, it should be placed to one side so that the rows (of prayer) are not disrupted. Allamah Wahidi has written in the commentary of Ibn Majah (1415): In this hadith, a well-known miracle is mentioned, that is, the crying of the wooden trunk out of separation from you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam... After this, he writes: A piece of wood had such love for you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam; it is astonishing regarding those people who are worse than wood, who abandon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and adopt another way. The scholars have said that as long as wood remains fresh, it has life in it and it glorifies (Allah); it is possible that this wood (or trunk) was fresh. Also, Allah Ta'ala is capable of bringing the dead to life and granting it the power of speech.
