Hadith 1600

Husayn bin Abdur Rahman said: ‘Amarah bin Ruwaybah saw Bishr bin Marwan raising his hands for supplication on the pulpit on Friday, so he reproached him and said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the pulpit, and he did not do like this, rather he would only gesture with his finger, and he gestured with his index finger from his side.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1598 to 1600)
From both of these hadiths, the prohibition of raising the hands in supplication during the sermon, or raising the hands in the same manner during conversation, is established. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would only raise his hands for supplication for rain, or he would gesture with his finger. Allamah Waheeduz-Zaman (rahimahullah) has said in Sharh Muslim: From this hadith, it is understood that raising the hands for supplication during the sermon is an innovation (bid‘ah) and is not permissible, and this is also the position of Malik, the companions of Shafi‘i, and other jurists.
