Hadith 1574

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not raise his hands in any supplication except for the supplication for rain.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1573)

From this hadith, it is established that for seeking rain (istisqa), one should raise the hands while supplicating. As for the statement of Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not raise his hands in supplication except for rain, it has been interpreted as based on his lack of witnessing (other instances). There are authentic ahadith proving that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam raised his hands in supplication on numerous occasions. However, there is no mention in any hadith of raising the hands in supplication after the obligatory (fard) prayers.
