From another chain of narration as well, Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the same manner.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1566 to 1571)

From all these authentic hadiths, the establishment of the prayer of eclipse (Salat al-Kusuf or Khusuf) and its various modalities are known. "Kusuf" and "Khusuf" both have the same meaning, that is, the loss of light of the sun and the moon. Whether this loss of light occurs due to the earth coming between them or due to some other apparent cause, its most significant spiritual reason is that Allah Ta'ala is informing His servants that the Being of Allah Ta'ala, Who can partially and temporarily take away the light from these celestial bodies, can, if He wills, completely and permanently take away their light and destroy them, because these are His most insignificant creations.

That is why the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would hasten towards prayer, supplication, and seeking forgiveness, and would command others to do so as well.

The prayer of eclipse (Salat al-Kusuf) was also performed by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in several ways, but he always performed two rak‘ahs (units of prayer). In each rak‘ah, he performed bowing (ruku‘) two to four times, and after rising from bowing, he recited Surah al-Fatihah and other recitation again, and in each rak‘ah, he performed two prostrations (sujud).

In Sahih al-Bukhari, the mention is of performing bowing (ruku‘) twice in each rak‘ah, which is more authentic than all other narrations. In the last hadiths, there is also the command to give charity and alms at the time of a solar eclipse.

It should be clear that in this prayer, both men and women can participate, and it is a confirmed Sunnah (sunnah mu’akkadah).
