Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1531)
According to some of the Ahl al-Zahir, it is forbidden (haram) to complete the recitation of the Noble Qur’an in less than three days. In some narrations, it is mentioned that the Qur’an should be recited in forty days, and in some narrations, there is mention of seven days as well.
Imam Nawawi rahimahullah said: There is no fixed limit for completing the recitation of the Noble Qur’an; whenever the heart inclines and one has the strength, one may recite. However, it is better not to complete it in less than seven days, or at the very least, not in less than three days. And one should recite the Qur’an with reflection and contemplation upon its meanings and objectives, because reciting the Qur’an while understanding its purpose is a cause of reward and is the desired and intended way.
Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah said to this humble one: One should certainly complete the recitation of the Noble Qur’an at least once a month.
Nowadays, those who recite the Noble Qur’an are rarely seen, which is a form of abandonment of the Qur’an (hajr al-Qur’an), which is warned against in the Qur’an: «﴿وَقَالَالرَّسُولُيَارَبِّإِنَّقَوْمِياتَّخَذُواهَذَاالْقُرْآنَمَهْجُورًا﴾ [الفرقان : 30]» meaning, “And the Messenger will say, ‘O my Lord! Indeed, my people have taken this Qur’an as [a thing] abandoned.’”
Therefore, one should recite some portion of the Noble Qur’an daily, and if it is recited along with translation, then it is light upon light.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever recites a single letter from the Noble Qur’an, for him is a reward, and each reward is multiplied tenfold...” [ترمذي 2910].
