It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah does not listen to anything with such love (and attention) as He listens to a Prophet reciting the Qur'an in a pleasant voice." Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By «تغني بالقرآن» is meant independence.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1526 to 1530)
«(مَاأَذِنَاللّٰهُ)» Both "idhn" and "sam‘" in the language mean "hearing," and this is an attribute of Allah Ta‘ala. The believer must have faith in it as it is, without asking how (bi-la kayf), and must believe in the attributes without likening them (to creation) (as stated by Allamah Waheeduz-Zaman, Sharh Muslim). Regarding the interpretation of «من لم يتغن بالقرآن», the scholars have differed.
Some have said: Whoever does not recite the Qur’an with pleasant melody, nor observes the rules of prolongation (madd) and emphasis (shadd), provided that no letter is pronounced less or more than its due, and does not introduce musical tunes (raagni) (Allamah Waheeduz-Zaman, Sharh Abi Dawood). In one narration, it is reported that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was asked: "Which voice is most beloved in the recitation of the Noble Qur’an?" He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: "The recitation from which the fear of Allah Ta‘ala is produced." It is also narrated: "Recite the Noble Qur’an in the dialects of the Arabs, and avoid reciting the Qur’an in the tones of singers and the People of the Book." The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "After me, a people will arise who will recite the Noble Qur’an in the manner of singers, singing it; this recitation will not go below their throats, and their hearts will be afflicted with trials (fitnah)."
Such recitation is absolutely prohibited.
It is Sunnah to recite the Noble Qur’an with deliberation (tarteel), in a moderate voice.
This is what is meant by pleasant melody (khush al-haani) and "taghanni bil-Qur’an." As for singing it, the Malikis have declared it haram (forbidden), while the Shafi‘is and Hanafis have considered it makruh (disliked).
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has said: Its meaning is that there should be no flaw in the pronunciation of any letter; if a letter is altered, then by consensus it is haram (forbidden) (Sharh Bukhari, by Maulana Raaz Sahib rahimahullah).
