Sha’tha’ said: I saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him), he performed two rak’ahs of prayer and said that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) received the good news of the conquest of Makkah or the beheading of Abu Jahl, he (peace be upon him) performed two rak’ahs of prayer at the time of Duha (forenoon).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1500)
There is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding the prostration of thankfulness (sajdat al-shukr): upon receiving pleasing news, should one merely perform a prostration (sajdah), or should one offer two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer as an act of gratitude? Imam Darimi rahimahullah is apparently inclined towards the former, which is why he established a chapter on the prostration of thankfulness. However, the hadith mentions the offering of two units of prayer as gratitude. In any case, at the time of receiving glad tidings, both acts—falling into prostration or performing two units of prayer as gratitude—are good and permissible. Both methods are established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. See: [ابن ماجه 1392، 1394].
